WhatsApp is top messaging app in over 100 countries
WhatsApp is the top messaging app for Android in 109 of the 187 countries assessed in a recent study by SimilarWeb. WhatsApp countries include Brazil, Mexico, India and Russia. Facebook’s Messenger app came in second overall, claiming 49 countries such as Australia, Canada and the US. 

After Messenger, Viber was the only other messaging app to claim ten or more countries. It is very popular in Eastern Europe and is the most used app in Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine. Line is the most popular app in Japan, while WeChat and Telegram also top the charts in multiple countries. 

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) is still very popular in Indonesia, where it is installed on 87.5 percent of all Android devices, compared to 0.42 percent in the US and only slightly more in Australia and the UK. SimilarWeb, which found that messaging apps were the top app overall in all markets analysed, has produced an interactive map giving a country-by-country breakdown for messaging apps.

WeChat Nigeria dismisses exit reports

WeChat Nigeria has dismissed reports that it is planning to exit the country following inactivity between users and social communications app WeChat. According to ITWeb, WeChat Nigeria has not been connecting with its users through conventional means on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter for about five months. Messaging app Line is planning an initial public offering in Tokyo in July, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. WhatsApp suspension in Brazil overturned

A judge in Brazil has overturned the suspension of WhatsApp in the country, reports Reuters. This follows an appeal from WhatsApp, according to the state tribunal. Earlier, a judge in the northeastern state of Sergipe had ordered Brazil's mobile operators to block access to WhatsApp for 72 hours. The reason for the order was not made public due to legal secrecy in an ongoing case before the state court. Facebook Messenger gets group calls

Facebook has started rolling out group calls on Facebook Messenger. Users in a group conversation can now click on the phone icon in order to start a group call. SimilarWeb raises USD 15 mln for expansion

Israeli start-up SimilarWeb said it raised USD 15 million to expand mobile product capabilities and target acquisitions in the mobile arena. SimilarWeb measures mobile internet usage and the apps where users spend the bulk of their time on smartphones. According to Globes, the latest investment was co-led by existing shareholders Naspers and Lord David Alliance.
