YouTube announced plans to start offering users of its mobile app the ability to live stream to the site. Following the success of Twitter's Periscope and Facebook Live, the Google video site said users of the Android and iOS YouTube apps can now broadcast live to the site.
YouTube has previously show live events on the site, such as concerts or sports events. This is the first time it allows users to post their own live streams. The company announced at the ViCon show in California a number of partners that will offer live video, including The Young Turks, AIB, Platica Polinesia, SacconeJolys and Alex Wassabi.
Separately, the company also unveiled a number of new original productions for its subscription service YouTube Red. These include second seasons of the series 'Scared Pewdiepie' and 'Foursome' as well as the new productions 'Step Up', a series based on the dance film franchise of the same name; 'Rhett & Link's Buddy System', a comedy series featuring former Saturday Night Live stars; a tour documentary by the YouTube stars Dan Howell and Phil Lester; and a 'vlogumentary' series about YouTube creators by filmmaker Morgan Spurlock and Maker Studios.
