Cable operator UPC Austria is considering entering the Austrian mobile market, local media reported. This follows reports that European competition regulators may force 3 Austria to open its network to other operators to operate as MVNOs, as a condition to its takeover of Orange Austria. Reuters reported that the European Commission has extended the investigation into the deal by about three weeks, meaning a decision could fall in late November. A source familiar with the situation told Reuters that the European Commission asked for more time to examine 3's deal with a MVNO allowing the new entrant to use its network in Austria. Local media reported that UPC has already signed a contract with 3 Austria and is now waiting for the regulators to examine the deal.
