America Movil reported a return to organic EBITDA growth in the first quarter, its first in eight quarters. EBITDA rose 1.5 percent at constant exchange rates, driven by a 3.1 percent increase in service revenue. The company attributed the growth to strong results in Mexico and Colombia, but said the recovery was broad based.
On a reported basis, revenues rose 18.5 percent to MXN 264 billion, and EBITDA was up 15.8 percent to MXN 7.2 billion, giving a margin down slightly to 27.1 percent. Foreign exchange gains also contributed to a sharp rise in net profit, to MXN 35.9 billion from MXN 4.8 billion a year ago.
In terms of customer growth, the company gained 632,000 postpaid mobile subscribers during the quarter, growing its base 5.1 percent year-on-year, while the prepaid base was down 3.3 percent after net disconnections of 1.4 million customers, mostly as a result of disconnections in the US under the SafeLink brand. Fixed RGUs increased by 1.8 percent year-on-year, led by 6.4 percent growth in broadband accesses. America Movil finished the quarter with 363 million access lines in total.
