Claro (America Movil) will start trialling a 5G network in Puerto Rico using the 28GHz band in the second quarter of 2019, reports website Caribbean Business, citing the operator's local CEO Enrique Ortiz de Montellano. “We are just months from bringing 5G to Puerto Rico, which is the next generation of wireless technology that will reach speeds 10 times faster than the current ones,” said Ortiz de Montellano, adding that the new technology will initially be tested in some areas before being expanded to all of the island territory.
The announcement comes after America Movil CEO Daniel Hajj last month said the company will have invested USD 250 million by the end of the year on improving Claro Puerto Rico’s networks in the wake of Hurricane Maria and preparing the infrastructure to cope with an expected 40 percent annual growth in data demand.
