Apple pays EUR 13 bln to Ireland in unfair state aid case
Apple has fully paid the EUR 13 billion in unfair state aid it was ordered by the European Commission to give to Ireland. Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe said the company paid the tax bill in tranches over the course of the second and third quarters. The first tranche was paid in May. The full amount was for EUR 13.1 billion, plus interest of EUR 1.2 billion. 

The Irish government and Apple have filed appeals against the European Commission’s decision. Until the outcome of these cases has been determined, the money will be kept in a special escrow account.

The EU's General Court upheld the appeal brought by Ireland and Apple and said the Commission had not shown Apple was given an unfair advantage over other businesses.

Apple quarterly results better than expected, sees Q4 sales up slightly

Apple reported better-than-expected sales growth for its fiscal fourth quarter to September. Revenues rose 20 percent year-on-year to USD 62.9 billion, and quarterly earnings improved 41 percent to USD 2.91 per share. For the current quarter to December, Apple forecast revenues of USD 89-93 billion, up from USD 88.3 billion a year ago.

Apple pays first EUR 1.5 bln towards disputed state aid in Ireland

Apple has made the first payment towards the EUR 13 billion in unfair state aid it was ordered to pay back to Ireland. The Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said that the first tranche of EUR 1.5 billion was deposited in an escrow fund and the remaining amount should be paid into the fund in Q2 and Q3.

EU orders Apple to pay EUR 13 billion in additional tax

The Commission's investigation, started in June 2014, covers the period going back to 1991. The selective tax treatment of Apple in Ireland was found to be illegal under EU state aid rules. As a result, Ireland must now recover the unpaid taxes from Apple for the years 2003-2014 of up to EUR 13 billion, plus interest. The period covered is limited by EU rules capping recovery at 10 years and Apple changing its headquarters structure in 2015.
