Argentina to launch 4G spectrum tender this year

Argentina plans to launch a 4G spectrum tender this year. The government will auction AWS (1.7-2.1GHz) and 700MHz spectrum for provision of 4G mobile services. According to Argentina's economy minister Axel Kicillof, tender winners will have to complete the deployment of 4G networks in up to 5 years. In addition, the government will auction the remaining 3G spectrum blocks in the 1900 MHz and 850 MHz frequency bands, assigned to ArSat in 2012. The tender will be open to domestic operators Personal, Movistar, Claro and Nextel, as well as to any other foreign company interested in launching operations in Argentina, Kicillof added.

According to government data, there are currently 45 million active mobile lines. Mobile telephony service penetration reaches 130 percent of Argentina’s population, but domestic operators have not yet completed the migration to 3G technology. Mobile broadband penetration is still low, said Kicillof. “3G progress is needed to open the door to 4G, and that is what we are doing today', the minister added.
