AT&T launches OTT video streaming services

AT&T has unveiled the details of its new OTT video streaming service, called DirecTV Now. Starting from 30 November, customers will be able to stream live sports, on demand, premium channels, popular shows, and hit movies to their tablet, smartphone or TV.

For the launch of DirecTV Now, AT&T will offer its 'Go Big' package, with more than 100 channels, for USD 35 per month, for a limited time. DirecTV Now programming packages are seeded from AT&T's existing satellite TV service and cost between USD 35 and USD 70 per month. HBO and Cinemax can be added for USD 5 each per month. 

The basic package includes 60+ channels for USD 35, while 'Go Big' normally costs USD 60. Other packages for USD 50 and USD 70 are also available. Interested customers can sign up on the directnow.com website to be alerted when the service is available. 

DirecTV Now initially works over Android and iOS phones, Chromecast and web browsers. AT&T said it plans to add more devices to its lineup in 2017, including Roku streaming players and Roku TV models, Amazon Fire tablets, and Smart TVs from Samsung and other leading brands. The DirecTV Now service will compete with other online TV offerings such as Dish Network's Sling TV and Sony's Playstation Vue, while the VoD service Hulu is also planning to launch a live TV service in early 2017. 

In addition, AT&T is continuing with the Fullscreen sVoD service with a new offer for its mobile customers. Customers will be able to enjoy Fullscreen at no charge for one year along with eligible new and existing mobile plans with messaging service. Starting 30 November, customers will be able to sign up for the offer at www.fullscreen.com/att and stream Fullscreen without using their data.

AT&T also offers the FreeView service, an ad-supported free video service. It has a sampling of on-demand content from Audience Network, Otter Media properties and other channels on DirecTV Now. Users can download the DirecTV Now app to access FreeView or visit www.directvnow.com and start streaming free of charge. In addition, AT&T will continue to provide DirecTV’s premium satellite TV service.

CBS reached a new agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment's OTT TV streaming service PlayStation Vue for continued carriage of CBS-owned stations and CBS affiliates across the US. In addition, the deal includes continued carriage of Showtime, CBS Sports Network, CBSN and Pop on PlayStation Vue. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

AT&T Q4 results fall on costs of acquisitions

AT&T reported a drop in fourth-quarter results, hurt by the costs of acquisitions such as DirecTV and expanding into Mexico. Hulu enriches film offer with Magnolia Pictures' movies

Hulu entered into a new output licensing agreement with Magnolia Pictures that will grant it exclusive streaming rights to films released by the major film distributor. AT&T to raise TV prices in January

AT&T is raising prices for customers on its IPTV service, formerly known as U-verse, according to posts on DSLreports.com.
