Australia releases details on upcoming 5G spectrum auction

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has released critical information for the upcoming auction of spectrum in the 3.6 GHz band for provision of 5G services. The ACMA will auction 125 MHz of spectrum in the 3.6 GHz band. The lots on offer will include 350 lots across 14 regions of Australia. The application fee has been set at AUD 10,000 (non-refundable).

The starting reserve price metro has been set at AUD 0.08/MHz/pop (excluding Perth lower lots) and AUD 0.053/MHz/pop Perth lower lots. The starting reserve price regional will be AUD 0.03/MHz/pop. The auction is scheduled for launch in November this year. The auction format will be enhanced simultaneous multi-round ascending with software developed by Power Auctions.

To help bidders prepare for the auction, the ACMA has released an Applicant information package that sets out key auction information. Parties who plan to participate in the auction should submit their application by 31 August.
