Axtel wins NIBA network broadband project tender

Mexican fixed-line operator Axtel has won a broadband project tender launched by the Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT), El Universal reports. The project will see the deployment of broadband connections in 40 metropolitan areas across Mexico. The project aims to increase the bandwidth for commercial internet access for the NIBA network through three interconnection points located in the cities of Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Eight operators placed their bids in the tender. Axtel’s bid reached MXN 37.6 million (VAT not included) for the next four years and seven months. Axtel will offer a 30 Gbps service for the NIBA network project (Red Nacional de Impulso a la Banda Ancha – Red NIBA) to increase broadband access in higher education institution, research centers, and large hospitals.

Mexico’s Niba network aims to create a high-speed network via 40 links and connection points, with available bandwidth of 1-10 Gbps. The project seeks to bring high speed network connections to 60 percent of the Mexican population.
