BT launches One Phone, to return to mobile consumer market

BT has launched a new service for UK SMBs called BT One Phone. This links all of a company's office phone system and mobile phone needs to a single service, hosted in the cloud and delivered on a mobile phone. The service operates on a full range of handsets by inserting a BT One Phone SIM.

BT CEO Gavin Patterson announced at the AGM that mobile and fixed line convergence represented a "significant opportunity to grow," the Financial Times reports. He told shareholders, "Later in the year we will come back to the consumer market and I think you’ll be excited."

To install BT One Phone, in most cases BT will build a dedicated mobile network in a customer's premises. Any phone with a BT One Phone SIM will automatically connect to the dedicated mobile network as soon as it's in range. Outside of the office, the service connects to the BT Mobile national network.

The new BT One Phone service will be supported by expert regional experience centres, which will be rolled out across the UK over the next six months.
