Cameroon shortlists seven candidates for 3G licence
Cameroon's post and telecom ministry has published its shortlist of seven candidates for the country's third 3G licence in the pages of Cameroon Tribune. They are Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telecom, Maroc Telecom, Monaco Telecom/Cable & Wireless Communications, Portugal Telecom, Korea Telecom and Viettel. The ministry said in late July that there were nine interested parties. No timeframe is given for the publication of a tender reserved to the short-listed candidates.

President signs decree to approve Viettel's Cameroon licence

Cameroon's president, Paul Biya, signed a decree on 7 June approving the award of a mobile telecom licence to Vietnam's Viettel Cameroon on 14 December 2012, Agence Ecofin reports. The company can now begin installing its network infrastructure to launch offer the country's third mobile service in competition with MTN and Orange. Viettel plans to invest over USD 360 million in logistics and mast installation.

KT denies bidding for Cameroon 3G licence

Korea Telecom denied reports that it placed a bid for a 3G mobile licence in Cameroon in partnership with local company TSI, Korean embassy staff told Ecofin. In fact, TSI placed the bid with project financier Octant Capital, which has a partnership with KT. TSI director Samuel Nono said an agreement was in place for KT to take a majority stake if the bid had been successful. Cameroon's ministry of posts and telecommunications has chosen Vietnam's Viettel as the winner of the country's third mobile operator's licence. Cameroon has attracted nine candidates for a new mobile licence in the country, the ministry of post and communications announced. The government aims to present a short-list of qualified bidders for the third licence within two weeks, and it will then open a tender for bids, the Cameroon Tribune reports.

Cameroon opens tender for third mobile operator

Cameroon's ministry of posts and telecommunications has launched a call for interested parties to apply for a 3G licence to become the country's third mobile operator, Cameroon Tribune reports. Applicants must be mobile communication operators of international reputation, not already active in Cameroon and with at least USD 200 million of capital as of the end of 2011. Minpostel will draw up a shortlist by 20 July. The country's two operators are currently Orange and MTN.
