Viettel wins mobile licence in Cameroon
Cameroon's ministry of posts and telecommunications has chosen Vietnam's Viettel as the winner of the country's third mobile operator's licence. The new operator, expected to provide 2G and 3G services, will cover 81 percent of the country when it begins operations, the minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Jean-Pierre Biyiti Bi Essam, said in a statement. Currently, Cameroon has some 11 million subscribers, representing a population penetration of around 50 percent. The existing operators are South Africa's MTN and France Telecom's Orange Cameroon. Three other operators - India's Bharti Airtel, Maroc Telecom and Korea Telecom - were also in the running for the licence.

Viettel Cameroon workers decry number of Vietnamese workers

Viettel Cameroon workers have mobilised to denounce the company's alleged favouritism towards Vietnamese managers at the expense of local employees, Agence Ecofin reports. Viettel Cameroon resolves stakeholder dispute

Viettel Cameroon has settled a shareholder dispute between Viettel Global CEO, Nguyen Duy Tho, and Bestinver Cameroon's owner, Ahmadou Baba Danpullo, reports Agence Ecofin. Cameroon's president, Paul Biya, signed a decree on 7 June approving the award of a mobile telecom licence to Vietnam's Viettel Cameroon on 14 December 2012, Agence Ecofin reports. Korea Telecom denied reports that it placed a bid for a 3G mobile licence in Cameroon in partnership with local company TSI, Korean embassy staff told Ecofin. Cameroon shortlists seven candidates for 3G licence

Cameroon's post and telecom ministry has published its shortlist of seven candidates for the country's third 3G licence in the pages of Cameroon Tribune. They are Bharti Airtel, Deutsche Telecom, Maroc Telecom, Monaco Telecom/Cable & Wireless Communications, Portugal Telecom, Korea Telecom and Viettel.
