Orange Cameroon asks government to upgrade its licence to 3G
Orange Cameroon managing director Elisabeth Medou Badang called on the government to authorise it to offer 3G services when its licence is up for renewal. Agence Ecofin reports that she took her message to the parliamentary group for ICT, which invited her to speak on 3 July.

Orange Cameroon first sought to a licence to offer 3G services three years ago. Medou Badang told MPs, "We welcomed the initiative of the authorities, which two years ago allowed the Cameroon to take another step towards ICT development by attributing a 3G licence (to Viettel Cameroon). We will soon arrive to the end of the exclusivity period, which happens to coincide with the renewal of our licence. In view of our ambition, we plan to invest heavily in the construction, development and exploitation of our networks in the years to come."

Viettel's 3G exclusivity would have ended in July, but Viettel has reportedly sought a 2-year extension given the fact that it has yet to launch its service commercially. Orange Cameroon's licence is up for renewal in 2015.
