Canal Plus acquires 6.5% stake in MultiChoice

French broadcasting group Canal+ has taken a 6.5 percent stake in African pay-TV provider MultiChoice. Multichoice confirmed the stake in a stock market filing but said it did not comment on individual shareholder relationships.  

Controlled by French media group Vivendi, Canal+ is also active on the African pay-TV market. The Canal+ group has more than 20.4 million subscribers worldwide, including 8.6 million in mainland France. MultiChoice has about 19.5 million subscribers in 50 countries and also controls the technology company Irdeto. It was spun off by Naspers in 2019 and listed on the Johannesburg stock market.

French media company Groupe Canal+ has acquired more shares in MultiChoice, taking its stake from 12 percent to 15.37 percent, MultiChoice said. It added that it remains committed to acting in the best interests of shareholders and creating long-term value, but its policy is not to comment on individual shareholders or its relationship with them. MultiChoice said it regularly engages with its strategic partners and maintains an open dialogue with the investment community.

MultiChoice Group picks Metrological for OTT services on DStv

MultiChoice Group has selected Metrological to bring premium OTT services, international apps and localised content to its subscribers throughout Africa on its new Explora Ultra set-top box as well as its new Streama OTT platform. MultiChoice uses the Metrological application platform to package MultiChoice content with apps and premium OTT services from the Metrological App Library to enhance viewing options.

Canal+ raises stake in MultiChoice to 12%

MultiChoice has disclosed that French pay-television giant Groupe Canal+ has continued buying its shares and now holds12 percent of the ordinary shares in issue. MultiChoice disclosed on 05 October that Canal+, which is owned by French media conglomerate Vivendi, had acquired 6.5 percent of its equity.

Vivendi returns to revenue growth in Q3, plans IPO for Universal Music in 2022

Vivendi generated revenues of EUR 4.02 billion in the three months to September, up 0.7 percent year-on-year organically (+1.3% on a reported basis). The growth trend recovered following a second quarter hit by the Covid-19 crisis, when revenues fell 7.9 percent organically. The media group has confirmed its intention to undertake an IPO for its Universal Music (UMG) business, as announced in February, saying that it plans to list its largest revenue-generating subsidiary in 2022.

MultiChoice has signed a co-production deal with Canal Plus for the Megan Fox action movie "Rogue". Africa to have 47 mln pay-TV subscribers by 2025 - study

Africa will have 47.26 million pay-TV subscribers by 2025, up from 30.7 million at end-2019, according to a report by Digital TV Research. Nigeria will contribute 10 million subscribers by 2025, overtaking South Africa in 2020 as the largest market, says the report.
