Canal Plus unveils SVoD service dedicated to TV series for EUR 6.99/month

French broadcaster Canal Plus announced the availability from 12 March of a new SVoD package for fans of TV series. Priced at EUR 6.99 per month, the subscription will offer 5,000 episodes across 150 current series, with several new productions in the pipeline. Around 90 percent of the content will be exclusive to Canal Plus.

The catalogue will include productions from its original programming operation (Creation Originale) and group subsidiary StudioCanal, as well as European and US TV series from Showtime and FX, among others. 

Named Canal+ Series, the VoD package will be available via the MyCanal app to start, without the need to subscribe to the standard Canal pay-TV service. The company said it aims to offer the new streaming package across all its distribution channels eventually.

Customers will be offered the option to add a second user to the subscription for an extra EUR 3 per month. For four users, the price will increase by EUR 5 to reach EUR 11.99 per month.

The new offer is priced just below Netflix, which has proven tough competition for France's leading premium TV service. Canal Plus has struggled to hold on to customers for its pay-TV offer, which is delivered through IPTV partners and satellite, and was forced to abandon its previous SVoD offer CanalPlay due to low take-up.

CanalPlus to close down CanalPlay service on 26 November

French broadcaster Canal Plus has informed customers that its CanalPlay SVoD service will close on 26 November, reports Universfreebox. The news was expected as the company had already hinted at a strategic repositioning of the offering last year. In July 2018, Canal Plus CEO Maxime Saada stated during a senate hearing that the CanalPlay subscriber base had fallen to 200,000 from a peak of 800,000, blaming the competitive disadvantage to Netflix arising from the broadcaster's regulatory obligations.

Netflix agrees distribution deal with Canal Plus in France

French broadcaster Canal Plus has announced a deal that will let its pay-TV subscribers bundle Netflix as part of a new package. Canal Plus to increase budget for original series

French pay-TV operator Canal Plus plans to increase spending on original content amid increasing competition from international players such as Netflix and Amazon. The company will increase the number of French original series produced each year to 8-10 from the current average of six and raise its production budget to around EUR 90 million from the current EUR 60 million, programming director Gerald-Brice Viret told Les Echos.

French broadcaster Canal Plus is expected to announce a new restructuring plan in the second week of July, reports AFP quoting an unnamed source. The company is targeting around 500 voluntary redundancies, representing nearly 20 percent of its workforce in the country. The news has been confirmed by a trade union representative, who stated that a meeting is due to take place on 09 July, with the proposed redundancy plan on the agenda.

Former France Televisions executive works on SVoD project to export French content abroad

Julien Verley has resigned from his position at France Televisions to develop an SVoD service focussed on the aggregation of French content in selected international markets. He aims to launch the new initiative sometime next year, after holding talks with players including broadcaster TF1, its former employer France Televisions and Canal Plus, where he worked as a senior executive for many years.

Netflix, Amazon remain strong growth drivers for French SVoD market in 2018

Revenues from subscription-based VoD (SVoD) services are estimated to have reached EUR 455 million in France during 2018, up 83 percent year-on-year compared to growth of 90 percent in 2017. The figures, part of a study by GfK and NPA Conseil, have been published by the French national film centre, the CNC, within its annual report. As in 2017, the continued strong growth in SVoD revenues was mainly driven by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which both secured further market share gains.

Cultural TV channel Arte works on pan-European VoD project

Franco-German TV network Arte is holding talks with its main shareholders on the possible launch of a pan-European VoD service, reports Les Echos quoting a statement from Veronique Cayla, the president of Arte France. Qatar-based pay-TV operator BeIN Sport is holding preliminary talks with French broadcaster Canal Plus over a possible sale, according to information gathered by the news team of Europe 1. No details have been disclosed yet on which of the group's holdings are under negotiation. Canal Plus is reportedly aiming to finalise a deal by summer.

Vivendi reported fourth-quarter revenues of EUR 4.06 billion, up 5.6 percent year-on-year on an organic basis (+5.6% in Q3).
