Candy Crush Saga on more than a fifth of Dutch smartphones
The top three smartphone gaming applications in the Netherlands are Candy Crush Saga, Wordfeud and Candy Crush Soda Saga. The app Candy Crush Saga is installed on 22 percent of Dutch smartphones, equal to almost 2.6 million users. This makes it the most popular gaming application in the country. The second and third most popular gaming applications are both installed over 1.5 million times, according to the April edition of Telecompaper’s Dutch Apps Market report

All three of the most popular games are installed more often by women than men. More than a quarter of women have Candy Crush Saga on their smartphone (27%), compared to 17 percent of men. The penetration of Candy Crush Saga is still growing among women (+2 percentage points compared to December 2015), but falling among men (-3 percentage points). The report also shows that Clash of Clans is becoming the latest game to gain attention; it entered the top 10 measured gaming applications during the latest period.

Applications in the categories voice/instant messaging and photo still show the highest penetration among Dutch smartphone users. However, the penetration of these types of application stabilised in recent months, suggesting their growth may have peaked.

In contrast, applications to buy and sell products, like Marktplaats and Vakantieveilingen, are becoming more popular. A third of the Dutch smartphone users had an application on their smartphone to buy or sell products, up from 27 percent a year earlier. These applications are especially popular among 30-39 year olds, with almost half of this age group having an app in this category on their smartphone. These apps are used on average 10 days a month.
