
Chile’s telecommunications regulator Subtel announced the opening of a new centre specialising in the research and development as well as the teaching of programs and applications based on the country’s forthcoming 5G network. The 5G Campus is a joint public-private initiative of the government, local operator Entel, the University of Chile and Ericsson, and can be found at the University of Chile’s Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (FCFM) in Santiago.
At the inauguration, the local government also announced the launch of the 5G National Observatory, backed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), with 5 lines of action covering the 5G Campus initiative, use cases for the public and private sector, promotion of 5G innovation and communication Subtel’s 5G regulatory activities.
Last month the country's ministry of transport and telecommunications (MTT) received offers from five different companies in the country’s delayed 5G spectrum tender. A total of 1,800 MHz of spectrum will be awarded in the 700 MHz, AWS (1,800 and 2,100 MHz), 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands. Barring legal challenges, the results of the tender will be announced in February 2021.
