Chile's Entel mulls Nextel Peru acquisition – report

Chilean mobile operator Entel plans to acquire the Peruvian unit of Latin America mobile operator NII Holdings, which operates under the Nextel brand. Entel has already made an offer to acquire Nextel Peru which is up for sale, local newspaper Diario Financiero reports, citing unnamed sources close to the matter.

Entel currently operates in Peru via its Americatel Peru subsidiary. Americatel provides voice, data and internet services for business customers in the Lima capital area.

According to unnamed Nextel sources, the company plans to sell various of its operations in Latin America.

Chile ported around 3,204 numbers in the first two days since the mobile number portability was launched on 16 January. Entel attracted nearly 54.5 percent of the overall mobile number portings in Chile. Chilean operators GTD Manquehue and Empresa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Entel) have called off their planned merger. The merger "will not take place exclusively due to Juan Manuel Casanueva's unilateral retraction", according to a filing Entel sent to securities regulator SVS.
