Latin America mobile operator NII Holdings, which operates under the Nextel brand, has agreed to sell its Peruvian unit to Chilean mobile operator Entel for USD 400 million. The proceeds from this sale will provide Nextel with additional liquidity as the company continues to invest in the deployment of its next-generation networks in Mexico and Brazil.
Entel currently operates in Peru via its Americatel Peru subsidiary. Americatel provides voice, data and internet services for business customers in the Lima capital area. The takeover of Nextel, which also focuses on the business segment, will allow it to expand in the mobile services market.
The closing of the transaction is expected to occur in the second half of this year.
