China awards FDD-LTE test licences
China Unicom has received 4G mobile network test licences for the FDD-LTE standard from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The licence covers 16 cities. On 27 June, China Telecom also announced it had received approval from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to start a LTE FDD and TD-LTE hybrid network trial in 16 cities on the mainland. These 16 cities are Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Nanjing, Jinan, Hefei, Shijiazhuang, Haikou, Zhengzhou, Chongqing, Shenzhen, Nanchang, Nanning and Lanzhou.

China Unicom, Telecom get LTE FDD permits

China Unicom and China Telecom said that they have been granted licenses to operate 4G service (LTE FDD) by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. MIIT also granted approval for the operators to provide LTE FDD service nationwide in China. The two operators have been testing LTE FDD since last summer. 4G networks to date in China have used the locally developed TD-LTE standard. With the new permits, the Chinese operators will adopt the more common FDD standards used elsewhere in the world.

China Telecom has obtained approval from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the PRC to expand its LTE FDD and TD-LTE hybrid network trial to 56 cities. China Telecom rolled out its LTE hybrid network trial in June. The additional 15 cities are Shaoxing, Taizhou, Changzhou, Xuzhou, Yangzhou, Yancheng, Qingdao, Tangshan, Baoding, Dalian, Zhongshan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Wuhu and Yulin.

China Unicom to expand TD-LTE/LTE FDD trial to Jiaxing

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China has allowed China Unicom to expand its TD-LTE/LTE FDD hybrid network trial to 41 cities. China Unicom received approval to conduct its TD-LTE/LTE FDD hybrid network trial in a total of 40 cities on 27 June and 28 August this year. The additional city is Jiaxing.

China Unicom improves profits despite revenue slowdown

China Unicom reported first-half revenues up 3.6 percent year-on-year to CNY 149.57 billion. Mobile service revenues rose 11.7 percent to CNY 81.34 billion, and fixed service revenues increased 4.5 percent to CNY 45.21 billion.
