Chunghwa Telecom will provide 5G services to both business and residential subscribers. For business customers, the operator will initially focus on services related to information security, big data analysis, IoT connections and IIoT (industrial IoT) for smart manufacturing, DigiTimes reports. Chunghwa also announced it will launch a 5G cloud gaming service in partnership with Gamestream.
Chunghwa Telecom is one of the five telecom operators that spent a total of TWD 138 billion (approximately USD 4.6 billion) in Taiwan’s 5G spectrum auction held in January. According to the NCC, Chunghwa Telecom spent TWD 45.7 million for 90MHz in the 3.5GHz band and TWD 618 million for 600MHz in the 28GHz band.
According to NCC chief secretary Hsiao Chi-hong, Chunghwa Telecom's base stations are currently deployed across six municipalities in Taiwan, namely Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung.
The other four telecom operators that also secured 5G spectrum in the January auction are Taiwan Mobile, Far EasTone Telecommunications, Taiwan Star Telecom and Asia Pacific Telecom. Hsiao said Far EasTone also submitted a document related to its 5G network development progress to the NCC for review and that a meeting could be held by NCC commissioners next week to review the operator’s efforts. Far EasTone secured 80MHz of the 3.5GHz band for TWD 40.6 billion, as well as 400MHz in the 28GHz band for TWD 412 million in the auction, and announced plans to launch 5G services in summer.
