Claro, Vivo and TIM win lots in 3.5 GHz band in Brazil 5G auction

Brazilian operators Claro, Vivo and TIM Brasil won three lots in the 3.5 GHz band during the 5G mobile spectrum auction held by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), reports Agencia Brasil. Claro bid BRL 338 million for lot B1 (5.18% premium), Vivo bid BRL 420 million for lot B2 (30.69% premium), and TIM bid BRL 351 million for lot B3 (9.22% premium).

There was also a fourth lot in the 3.5 GHz band, with national coverage, but there was no bids.

Significantly, Brazil will also get a fourth 5G mobile operator, as Winity II Telecom (owned by the Patria fund) took the 700 MHz band block with a bid of BRL 1.42 billion (+802% premium). The other operators already hold spectrum in the 700 MHz band, and this block is reserved for developing a network for public services, such as government administration and emergency services. 

All the licences will be awarded for a period of 20 years. Bidding continues 05 November when bids for the 2.3 GHz and 26 GHz bands will be analysed.

Telefonica Brasil to share network infrastructure with Winity Telecom

Telefonica Brasil signed several contracts for the reciprocal sharing of telecom infrastructure with Brazilian independent mobile network operator Winity. The operator will rent passive infrastructure to expand mobile coverage, at up to 3,500 sites by the end of 2030. Winity also leased to Telefonica Brasil a 5MHz + 5MHz block of its 700 MHz national radio frequency spectrum, to be used in around 1,100 Brazilian municipalities for up to 20 years.

Claro Brasil tests 2.3 GHz band carrier aggregation

Claro Brasil has trialed carrier aggregation with the 2.3 GHz band over the weekend during a Stock Car race at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, reports Telesintese. The operator took advantage of the existing infrastructure with new-generation network core and antennas from suppliers Ericsson and Qualcomm. According to CMO Marcio Carvalho, the 2.3 GHz band represents "joker spectrum" that can be used for both 5G and 4.5G.

Brazil confirms auction of remaining 5G frequency lots in 2022

Brazil's Communications Minister, Fabio Faria, has confirmed that the auction of leftover 5G frequencies will be held in 2022, reports Folha de Sao Paulo. About 15 percent of the available lots in the 26 GHz band were not sold in the auction that took place in November. Interest from operators was muted because the 26 GHz frequency band has lower coverage penetration, requiring more expensive equipment to transmit a stronger signal.

5G technology will account for 20 percent of Brazilian mobile connections in 2025, with 4G still taking 79 percent, according to the latest GSMA report on the Latin American mobile market. Brazilian regulator confirms results of 5G auction

Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has approved the results of the 5G auction, for frequencies in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands. This is the last action in the bidding process, taking place only when no more appeals are pending analysis. The regulator also summoned the winning companies to sign contracts for the use of frequencies, to be done within 10 days.

Brazil to auction remaining mobile frequencies within the year

Brazil Communications Minister Fabio Faria said that 85 percent of the frequency lots available were sold during the recent 5G auction, for BRL 47.2 billion. At a Parliamentary hearing, Faria added that the remaining 15 percent will be sold within six months to one year and that the green light has already been obtained from regulator Anatel and the Federal Court of Accounts.

TIM Brasil launches 5G Standalone tests with Enel

TIM Brasil is carrying out a 5G Standalone pilot in Sao Paulo in partnership with energy distribution company Enel, reports Telesintese. The tests in an electric substation are being conducted in the 3.5 GHz band and use Ericsson AIR 6449, AIR3227, and AIR 6488 antennas. Qualcomm provided a 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) gen 2 CPE with Snapdragon X62 5G Modem, while Motorola provided Edge, Moto G 5G and Moto G100 smartphones.
