Com Hem appoints ex-Virgin COO Barron as executive chairman

Swedish cable operator Com Hem has announced the appointment of Andrew Barron as executive chairman. Nikos Stathopoulos, current chairman of Com Hem, will remain on the board as a non-executive Director. Barron was formerly Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Virgin Media and prior to that, COO of Modern Times Group (MTG).

Barron has eighteen years of experience in the media and cable sector, a track record of successfully launching TiVo and other advanced cable services, and a strong understanding of the Swedish media landscape from his time at MTG. Barron will work alongside Tomas Franzen, current CEO, in running the company’s day-to-day operations. Barron will invest in Com Hem and lead the search for a new CEO to replace Franzen by the end of 2014.

Com Hem is majority-owned by funds advised by BC Partners, the international private equity firm.

Com Hem suffers dip in Q4 revenue and RGUs

Adjusted EBITDA declined to SEK 541 million from SEK 583 million, as a result of lower revenue and slightly higher production and operating costs. The group net loss for the quarter rose to SEK 478 million from SEK 116 million a year earlier.

Com Hem to raise some broadband speeds to up to 1 Gbps

Com Hem said it will significantly raise its broadband speeds for certain households in the new year. Com Hem sees revenue and EBITDA fall in Q3

Swedish cable company Com Hem said revenue in the third quarter of 2013 fell to SEK 1.104 billion from SEK 1.133 billion in the same period of 2012. Adjusted EBITDA decreased slightly to SEK 571 million in the third quarter from SEK 589 million in the same quarter of 2012 as a result of lower revenue, partly offset by lower production and operating costs. The group recognised a net loss of SEK 141 million for the third quarter, up from a net loss of SEK 134 million in the same quarter last year.

Com Hem says CEO Franzen to leave at end-2014

Com Hem said Tomas Franzen is to step down as CEO after more than five years with the company, although he will remain in that role until the end of 2014 to ensure a smooth transition. The process to select a successor is well under way, and Com Hem expects to be able to name the replacement in the near future.

Virgin Media COO criticises govt broadband strategy

Most of the GBP 980 million pounds earmarked by the UK Government for improving broadband coverage in the country will be used to subsidise BT Group, claims Virgin Media's chief operating officer (COO) Andrew Barron. In a letter to The Guardian newspaper, a day before giving evidence to the Lord communications committee's inquiry into the UK's broadband strategy, Barron insists that the noble idea of locally procured rural broadband networks is protracted and likely to favour BT, freezing out new entrants.
