Comcast unveils Infinity Flex streaming TV platform for internet-only subscribers

US cable operator Comcast has introduced Xfinity Flex, a new streaming service aimed at its internet-only customers. The service, to launch next week for USD 5 per month, brings together a number of subscription streaming services, free content, and voice control to manage all connected devices in the home, all from one platform. Specifically, Xfinity Flex will come with an internet-connected, 4K HDR streaming TV device, Comcast’s voice remote, an integrated guide for accessing popular streaming video and music apps, and Comcast’s home Wi-Fi, mobile, security, and automation services.

Comcast said the aim of the platform is to give easy access to entertainment, but also to help users find their Wi-Fi password, see what devices are connected to their network, set parental controls, and pause Wi-Fi access on their home network, should they want to. People can in addition use voice control to access camera feeds, arm or disarm their home security system and find their Xfinity Mobile phone, all from the TV.

In terms of content, the service will bring over 10,000 free online movies and TV shows, including live streaming TV, from ESPN3, Xumo, Pluto TV, Tubi TV, Cheddar, YouTube, and others. Users will also be able to easily browse and access programming across apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Showtime. They will be able to rent and purchase movies and shows from the digital store, access their digital lockers across platforms by pairing their account with Movies Anywhere, or listen to music from Pandora, iHeartRadio, and XITE. In the near future, people will also be able to upgrade to the full Xfinity X1 cable service from the guide, which offers hundreds of live channels, tens of thousands of on demand titles, and a cloud DVR.
