Mexico's competition watchdog CFC has confirmed its earlier ruling that America Movil unit Telcel is dominant in the domestic mobile phone market, La Jornada reports. According to CFC, Telcel currently serves nearly 70 million customers, of Mexico’s overall 100 million mobile user base.
Back in 2010, CFC ruled that mobile unit Telcel was dominant in the mobile phone market. America Movil had appealed against the dominance ruling by the Federal Competition Commission (CFC) and in August 2011, Mexico's Supreme Court of Justice temporarily suspended these antitrust rulings, requesting CFC to review its initial findings.
Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel) and the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) are now expected to release asymmetric regulations aimed at reducing Telcel's market power.
