CTIA to start IoT device security certification

The US mobile industry group CTIA is launching a programme to certify cellular IoT devices for cybersecurity. It will start accepting devices for certification by verified labs from October.

The growing number of connected devices as well as increased cybersecurity threats prompted the CTIA to set up the programme in order to support growth in the ecosystem. It already provides similar standards for mobile phones, components and other mobile network terminals, with over 70,000 certification requests handled to date by more than 100 authorised labs.

The IoT device standards are based on a collaboration of mobile operators, technology companies, security experts and test labs, along with security recommendations from the US government's National Telecommunications and Information Administration and National Institute of Standards and Technology. The global mobile industry group GSMA launched a similar initiative earlier this year to verify IoT services for security standards.
