Digital music sales up 8% to USD 5.6 bln in 2012 - IFPI
Digital accounted for 35 percent of the world's overall USD 16.5 billion recorded music revenues in 2012, compared to 57 percent for physical sales, according to the IFPI. Global digital music revenues grew 8 percent to USD 5.8 billion last year, while overall music revenues increased by only 0.2 percent. Downloads are the biggest source of digital revenues, with tack and album downloads up 11 percent in 2012 compared to a year earlier. Music subscription services are growing rapidly, with subscription and ad-supported streaming services reaching 20 percent of digital revenues, up on 14 percent in 2011. In Europe alone, they accounted for 31 percent of all digital music revenues.
