Docomo to launch Japan's first VoLTE service
NTT Docomo announced that its Xi network will offer Japan's first LTE service for voice and video calls using VoLTE technology, beginning late June. Four smartphones and two tablets in Docomo's summer lineup will become compatible with the new service after a software update scheduled in or after late June. 

The service will enable users to receive Area Mail disaster-information notifications while making VoLTE voice/video calls. Also, users will be able to access up to 150 Mbps high-speed LTE data communication during VoLTE voice calls. Docomo's new VoLTE service will require a subscription to Xi. Existing Xi billing plans, packet flat-rate services, discounts and dialing charges will be applicable to VoLTE voice calls, including the new Kake-hodai & Pake-aeru billing plans for flat-rate voice and data, as well as data sharing with family members.

Packet communication charges for VoLTE video calls will be offered free of charge until September 2015, after which video calls will incur both voice and packet communication charges.

NTT Docomo posts net profit of JPY 136.4 bln in fiscal Q1

Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo posted a net profit of JPY 136.4 billion in the first fiscal quarter ended 30 June, down from JPY 158 billion in the year-ago quarter. Operating revenues for fiscal Q1 amounted to JPY 1.175 trillion, down 3.4 percent year-on-year. NTT Docomo's EBITDA reached JPY 386.7 billion in the quarter, down from JPY 420.4 billion year-on-year. T-Mobile USA brings VoLTE to Seattle

T-Mobile USA has launched Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in the Seattle area, available for existing LG G Flex and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Light customers. The company said it is working on a LTE Advanced version of VoLTE, which it plans to roll out to more T-Mobile customers in the coming year. To use the new VoLTE, customers need to adjust their settings and get the latest software update. Rivals Verizon and AT&T have also announced in recent days plans to launch VoLTE.

NTT Docomo to deploy 40,000 LTE stations this fiscal year

Japanese mobile operator NTT Docomo expects to deploy a total of 40,000 new LTE base stations across the country during fiscal year 2014 ending in March 2015, NTT Docomo president and CEO Kaoru Kato, told a conference call with investors.
