DoT publishes qualified bidders for spectrum auction
The Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has published a list of qualified bidders for the upcoming auction of for 1800 MHz and 900 MHz spectrum. Vodafone India has been qualified to bid for spectrum in all areas except Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, North East, and Orissa. Reliance Communication has been excluded from Assam, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Kolkata, Madhya Pradesh, North East, Orissa, and West Bengal. Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Reliance Jio Infocomm, and Telewings have been qualified to bid for spectrum in all areas.

Bharti Airtel acquires 115 MHz of spectrum for INR 185.3 bln

Indian operator Bharti Airtel has announced it has acquired 115.0 MHz of spectrum for a total of INR 185.30 billion in the recently concluded spectrum auction. Bharti will make an upfront payment of INR 54.25 billion, with the balance to be paid in ten annual instalments, commencing two years from now. The company said it plans to roll-out 4G networks in various circles using FD-LTE technology in the 1800 MHz band besides its existing TD-LTE roll-out in the 2300 MHz band.

Indian spectrum auction raises almost USD 10 billion

The Indian government has raised over INR 611 billion (USD 9.9 billion) from the auction of spectrum licences in the 900 and 1,800 MHz bands, well ahead of its previous projections. RCom names Sawhny as CEO

Indian operator Reliance Communications (RCom) has appointed Vinod Sawhny as chief executive. Sawhny comes from Bharti Airtel, where he was head of the rival operator's retail operations. RCom also expanded the role of CEO Wirelesss, Gurdeep Singh to CEO Consumer Business, comprising wireless, DTH, and consumer broadband. Punit Garg will continue as CEO of the Indian enterprise and IDC business, and Bill Barney is the CEO of Reliance Globalcom.

Indian Supreme Court rejects stay of spectrum auction

India's Supreme Court has rejected a last-minute appeal from the country's largest mobile operators to stay the spectrum auction set to start on 03 February. Vodafone expands network in Maharashtra and Goa circle

Mobile operator Vodafone India has increased network presence in Maharashtra and Goa to meet increased data demand. The company experienced a year-over-year data growth of 100 percent in the telecom circle. Vodafone installed over 300 mobile sites in the past six months and expanded its network to include Satara, Sangli, Miraj and Dhule, PTI reports citing Ishmeet Singh, Vodafone's head for the Maharashtra and Goa business. The operator currently serves 14.7 million subscribers in the circle.

Tata Teleservices sees Q3 revenues grow 6.6%

Indian operator Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (TTML) narrowed its net loss to INR 1.56 billion in the fiscal third quarter to 31 December, compared with INR 1.97 billion a year earlier. Revenues went up 6.6 percent to INR 7.11 billion from INR 6.67 billion and EBITDA came in at INR 1.48 billion, up from INR 920.10 million in the year-ago period. Tata Teleservices also announced that N. Srinath was re-appointed as managing director of the company, for a period of three years.

Idea's Q3 profit, revenues grow

Indian mobile operator Idea Cellular posted a profit of INR 4.68 billion in the third quarter ended 31 December 2013, up from INR 2.29 billion a year earlier. Revenues grew to INR 66.13 billion from INR 55.79 billion with mobility revenues growing to INR 65.36 billion, ILD revenues falling to INR 1.04 billion, and passive infrastructure revenues slipping to INR 6.18 billion. EGoM proposes SUC of 5%

India's Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) has approved a spectrum usage charge (SUC) of 5 percent of annual gross revenue, the Economic Times writes. The charge applies on all new spectrum acquired through auction. The SUC for broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum will stay at 1 percent but BWA spectrum holders will also pay 5 percent on any new spectrum they may acquire. Indian mobile operator Bharti Airtel is in talks to buy Loop Mobile. The latter is in talks with a number of players to sell its business, the Times of India writes citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.
