Dutch multi-play market growth slows, at 6.5 mln subscribers

Growth in the number of multi-play households in the Netherlands is slowing, with already 84 percent taking two or more services from the same provider. In the first quarter of 2017, 38,000 multi-play subscribers were added in the market, for a total 6.54 million, according to the Telecompaper report 'Dutch Consumer Multiplay Market'.

Over 14 percent took a quad-play plan, with the three fixed services TV, broadband and fixed line as well as mobile telephony. Quad-play's penetration has increased from just over 12 percent a year ago, as more consumers upgrade from triple-plays. Nevertheless, the majority of Dutch households are still on triple-play plans, with 3.96 million combining three services - fixed or mobile - with the same provider.

KPN is the largest provider on the quad-play market with 86.5 percent of subscriptions and 88 percent of revenues. Number two Ziggo only started offering quad-play advantages in Q2 this year, following its merger with Vodafone Netherlands, and had less than 11 percent of subscriptions and 10 percent of quad-play revenue in Q1.

Dutch multiplay revenues, share by type of plan

The market is expected to get an impulse from VodafoneZiggo more actively marketing its quad-play offers since April. This should help the quad-play segment grow further and lead to a lower market share for KPN, Telecompaper analyst Kamiel Albrecht said.

Triple-play takes most revenues

Revenues from multi-play services in the Netherlands rose 0.5 percent year-on-year to EUR 1.05 billion in Q1. Quad-play took over 22 percent of the total, making it bigger than dual-play. Triple-play still accounts for the biggest share of revenue, at over 60 percent.

In the total multi-play market, Ziggo is biggest, with 47.8 percent of subscriptions, followed by KPN with 39.5 percent. Ziggo also takes 47 percent of revenues, while KPN has 43.3 percent of multi-play revenue.
