Elisa tests 4G in 700 MHz band
Finnish operator Elisa has started testing the 700 MHz band for mobile services. The company received a licence for the tests from the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority and uses equipment from Nokia. 

Elisa's 4G network already covers over 98 percent of the population, and the additional frequencies would be used to add capacity over a wider area, especially in rural areas. The Finnish government said earlier this year that it aims to auction licences for the 700 MHz band by the end of this year.

Finnish 700 MHz auction to start on 24 November

The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications said a government decree on the 700 MHz auction will come into force on 10 October, and applications will be invited for licences for the frequency band. Elisa claims new 4G speed record with 1.9 Gbps

Finnish operator Elisa has claimed a new world record with speeds of 1.9 Gbps over a test 4G network set up with Huawei. The record was set using Huawei's latest 4G technology. Elisa said it marks an important milestone towards 5G and delivering new services such as virtual reality over mobile networks. Currently, the maximum speed on Elisa's network is 450 Mbps, and the fastest available mobile broadband subscription offers speeds of up to 300 Mbps.

Elisa raises FY outlook after H1 growth, Anvia takeover

Finnish operator Elisa reported a small increase in second-quarter results and raised its outlook for the full year. Revenues rose to EUR 393 million from EUR 390 million a year ago, led by a 7 percent rise in mobile service revenue to EUR 190 million. EBITDA increased to EUR 134 million from EUR 131 million, and pretax profit was up to EUR 75 million from EUR 74 million. Cash flow after investments was stable at EUR 69 million. Elisa opens tech event and service centre in Helsinki

Elisa said it is opening a new kind of service centre in Helsinki on 15 June, called Elisa Corner (Elisa Kulma). It will be located opposite the Stockmann department store, an Alexander Street. Elisa said it is will be an event and meeting place, for entertainment, culture and technology-related to topical themes. It is seeking to recruit four creative consultants to provide ideas for the project.

Elisa signs up to Oulu model housing development

Finnish operator Elisa said it has signed a letter of intent with Hartela-Forum, Oulu University, Oulu Energia, PSOAS, Caritas Palvelut, TA-Yhtyma and Touhula Varhaiskasvatus concerning a residential development in the Karjasilta district of the city of Oulu. The aim of the project is to develop a new kind of housing built in a way that sustains the environment, with solar energy panels and partial winter frost protection provided by Oulu Energy. This requires live sensor technology.

Finland to auction 700 MHz band by year-end

The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications announced plans to auction the 700 MHz band for mobile services by the end of this year. The band is expected to be released from broadcasting and available for the mobile sector by 2017, so an auction will be arranged by the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority by the end of 2016. The ministry said the new frequencies will help boost the coverage of 4G networks.
