Ericsson-led consortium launches 5G connected car project

Ericsson announced that it will be leading a consortium of several companies in an EU-funded project to develop an overall 5G system architecture providing end-to-end vehicle-to-everything (V2X) network connectivity. The project involves 14 partners including Orange, Huawei, Nokia, PSA group and Volvo Cars and represents a significant step towards the advent of 5G technology for connected vehicles, said Ericsson, adding that the full details of the 5GCAR initiative will be outlined in full later this month.

Funding for the project comes from phase 2 of the EUR 154 million 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP), which was initiated by the European Commission and industry manufacturers, telecommunications operators, service providers, SMEs and researchers. The consortium will be eligible for EUR 8 million in funding in order to extend tests and ensure the safe deployment of the connected vehicle by 2020, said Ericsson.

The project will run from June 2017 until May 2019 with the remaining consortium partners including Bosch, Centre Tecnologic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya, Centro Tecnologico de Automocion de Galicia, Chalmers University of Technology, King's College London, Marben, Sequans and Viscoda.
