Ericsson, Telia run trial of 5G-connected electric mini-bus in central Stockholm

Ericsson said it and Telia Company are running a 5G-enabled, electric driverless public transport pilot on the island of Djurgarden in Stockholm. The 5G Ride minibus will run for approximately two weeks on the island. Ericsson and Telia have deployed 5G sites along the 1.6 km route, which use Ericsson Radio Systems products and an Ericsson control tower.

The route serves the National Museum of Science and Technology, the Maritime Museum, the Nordic Museum and Vasa Museum. Ericsson said its tower controls data transfer with low latency and reliability, enabling the connected minibus to respond instantly to commands sent from the tower. The initial tests are due to be followed by more trials in 2021.

The current pilot initiative is part of a partnership between Urban ICT Arena, Keolis, Telia, Ericsson and Intel. The scheme is backed by Vinnova and Drive Sweden, and the minibus is provided by technology company T-Engineering.
