The European Commission has approved EUR 1.98 billion in funding for the EU's Digital Europe Programme. The main work programme, worth EUR 1.38 billion through the end of 2022, will support projects developing artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and data spaces, quantum communication infrastructure, advanced digital skills, and the wider use of digital technologies across the economy and society.
The remaining funding includes EUR 269 million for cybersecurity projects until end-2022 and EUR 239 million for setting the European Digital Innovation Hubs until the end of 2023. The latter are expected to form a network of technology testing sites to support digital transformation at private and public organisations.
The first tenders for funding under the Digital Europe project will be published by the end of November, with more calls following in 2022. In total the programme has a budget of EUR 7.5 billion over seven years.
