European mobile payment systems form industry association

Swiss mobile payment service provider Twint announced the formation of the European Mobile Payment Systems Association (EMPSA), which will be based in Zurich. The other members are the nationally launched payment systems of Belgium (Bancontact Payconiq Company), Germany/Austria (Bluecode), Finland/Denmark (MobilePay), Portugal (SIBS/MB Way), Sweden (Swish) and Norway (Vipps).

EMPSA is chaired by chairman of the Twint board of directors, Soren Mose. Twint's deputy CEO and CFO Anton Stadelmann will act as general secretary.  Its remit includes planning the interoperability of the mobile payment systems across national borders.

Altogether, the seven member companies have around 25 million registered users, over 1 million acceptance points, and there are some 350 banks that support the systems.

In the medium term, the association intends to make it possible for users to use all of the individual systems in each member country. EMPSA has already set up a working group to review the technical aspects of interoperability.

Vipps MobilePay makes interoperability test payment to Portuguese wallet MB Way

Nordic mobile payment providers agree merger in face of global competition

Danske Bank's MobilePay service, Finnish OP Financial Group's Pivo system and the Vipps payment service provided by a consortium of Norwegian banks have agreed a merger in the face of growing global competition. Vipps will own 65 percent of the new entity, which will create a common technology platform on the basis of the current Vipps system. Rune Garborg, the CEO of Vipps, will become CEO of the merged business.

Telia Norway is sponsoring the Koronerulling online concerts run by Oslo's Sentralen arts centre to support Norwegian artists during the coronavirus restrictions. More than 50 digital concerts have already been run on the scheme, attracting almost 350,000 spectators on Facebook and YouTube. Telia did not say how much money it would provide.

Payconiq granted PIS licence to support European expansion

Payconiq has received the first payment initiation service (PIS) licence from the Luxembourg government, allowing the mobile payments provider to provide banking services under the EU's latest payment services directive. The company said the licence is necessary to expand its services beyond the Benelux to the rest of Europe.

China's Alipay partners with European mobile wallets

Chinese tourists visiting Europe will be able to pay using QR codes with local digital wallets from this summer. This follows the partnership between Alipay and six European digital wallet operators to promote the interoperability of digital payments based on the QR code for travelers in both Europe and China. The partnership was agreed with Portuga's Pagaqui, Spain's Momo Pocket, Austria's Blue Code, Norway's Vipps and Finland's ePassi and Pivo, which will adopt a compatible QR Code format provided by Alip

Vipps integrates Nets' eFaktura functionality

Norwegian mobile payment application Vipps and European payment services provider Nets have agreed to combine the functionality of the Vipps app with Nets' eFaktura invoicing service. More than 3.2 million Norwegians use Vipps and around 2.6 million use eFaktura, which distributes approximately 100 million invoices each year. Vipps is owned by 107 Norwegian banks.

Swish transactions rise 56% in 2018, merchant transactions up 280%

Mobile transactions company Getswish said that Swish remains Sweden's most popular mobile payments method, with Swish transactions rising 56 percent year on year to 397 million in 2018. The increase in companies and merchants providing the facility means the number is likely to keep growing. Merchant transactions, including e-commerce, climbed by approximately 280 percent from 2017 to 52 million last year.

Payconiq and Bankcontact merge Belgian mobile payment apps

Payconiq and Bankcontact have jointly released a new all-in-one payment app. The new Belgian pay-app Payconiq by Bancontact will replace the existing mobile payment apps from Bancontact and Payconiq. Users can use the new app mobile payment everywhere the other apps could be used. Payment with the app is possible at both shops and web shops, and between users.

Twint customer base records significant growth

Swiss mobile payment service Twint has recorded a significant growth in the number of users since October 2018, reports Inside-IT.ch. In Christmas business in December 2018, Twint found 15,000 new subscribers every week, CEO Markus Kilb told Schweiz am Sonntag. The Twint user base will soon reach 1.2 million registered users.

Bluecode mobile payment service to get financing from three investors

Mobile payment service Bluecode, with its seat in Vienna and the Swiss municipality Lachen, will get EUR 11.2 million from three otherwise unspecified "family offices", reports Der Standard. They are entrepreneurs from the German-speaking area, said Bluecode CEO Christian Pirkner. The three investors would acquire in total around 13 percent of the company.

Danske Bank's MobilePay signs partnership with Finnish co-operative retail chain and bank

Danske Bank's MobilePay said it will start operating at the cooperative grocery chain S Group in autumn and inconjunction with the cooperative bank, S-Pankki (S-Bank). S Group has 1,600 outlets and almost 37,000 employees. S-Bank has 3.0 million customers with 2.1 million S-Etukortti Visa cards.

Swiss mobile payment application Twint allows now fingerprint authorisation. Touch-ID for iPhones and fingerprint scanner for Android smartphones works with all Twint apps. In November 2017, the provider reported reaching the milestone of half a million users, after the launch in spring 2017.
