Facebook will work with French regulators on a new initiative that will enable the company to demonstrate its commitment to stamp out hateful and offensive content online. Speaking at the Internet Governance Forum in Paris, French President Emmanuel Macron described the project as an innovative experimental approach and an important first step in what he has previously referred to as “smart regulation”.
According to La Tribune, the pilot will take place in the first six months of the year, when the company will host a delegation including, among others, members of the French competition authority and telecom regulator Arcep. This team will be able to investigate how the social network moderates hate speech, with the aim to produce practical recommendations jointly with Facebook at the end of the pilot.
In related news, the company has recently announced that in 2019 it will devote EUR 1 million worth of funds to support French start-ups and organisations working on civic engagement and community projects, as part of its commitment to fight online harassment and bullying.
