Facebook loses chief product officer Cox, WhatsApp chief Daniels

Facebook announced that its chief product officer Chris Cox and WhatsApp head Chris Daniels are leaving the company.

Cox has been with the company more than a decade. In May 2018 he received the title of chief product officer, in charge of the new 'Family of apps', after previously overseeing the Facebook app. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Cox agreed to stay on in 2016 to help chart a course for the apps. Following the recent shift in strategy to focus more on private messaging, he is taking the moment as an opportunity to leave for new pursuits. Javier Olivan, who already assisted in product development across the apps family, will take over full management of the products.

Daniels has also decided to leave the company. He was named head of WhatsApp in the same reorganisation in May 2018, after the departure of WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum. He previously led the business development team and Internet.org. Will Cathcart will be the new head of WhatsApp, after previously managing the Facebook app. He will be replaced in that role by Fidji Simo.

Zuckerberg said he would not appoint anyone new to Cox's role, as the strategy for the apps is largely set. Instead, the leaders of Facebook (Fidji Simo), Instagram (Adam Mosseri), Messenger (Stan Chudnovsky) and WhatsApp (Will Cathcart) will report directly to the CEO.
