Facebook has announced the launch of Facebook News in the UK from January 2021. The company is also in active negotiations to bring Facebook News to Germany and France.
Facebook said it will support journalism in the UK by providing a dedicated space for national and local news. Facebook will pay publishers for content that is not already on the platform, helping publishers generate more advertising and subscription revenues and reach new audiences.
The first group of publishers signed up for Facebook News in the UK include Guardian Media Group, ESI Media, The Economist, Conde Nast, Archant, STV, Reach, Midland News Association, JPI Media, Iliffe and Hearst. Facebook expects more partners to sign up before launch. Facebook News will provide a combination of personalised and curated stories, with users seeing the top headlines/stories of the day along with personalised news.
The UK launch of Facebook News follows a successful launch in the US, where more than 95 percent of traffic to Facebook News is new audiences that have not previously interacted with these news outlets.
