Facebook services down again briefly on 9 October

Facebook services disappeared from the web again on Friday, 9 October, TechCrunch reported. A more severe outage affected the company on 4 October. The latest outage was brief compared to the last one and services were back up online under 30 minutes after Facebook tweeted about its problem. The glitch affected all Facebook platforms, including WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram.

Facebook told TechCrunch that the latest outage was due to configuration changes, but that it was unrelated to Monday’s downtime which lasted 6 hours. The longer outage was also caused by configuration changes, to the routers in Facebook’s data centres.

Facebook has announced a USD 10 million Creator Fund for the Horizon social VR world it first unveiled at the Oculus Connect event of 2019. The company launched a closed beta of the world in August 2020 and now wants more creators to come build on the world. Russian operator MTS has announced that SMS and voice traffic suddenly soared in the evening of 04 October, during the period when Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp faced technological problems. Facebook files new request to dismiss US anti-trust lawsuit

Facebook has filed its second motion requesting the dismissal of the Federal Trade Commission's lawsuit accusing it of illegal monopolisation. In a statement confirming the filing, Facebook said the FTC had failed to provide a "plausible factual basis for branding Facebook an unlawful monopolist" and that the commission "had no basis for its naked allegation that Facebook has or had a monopoly" through unlawful exclusionary conduct.

Facebook blames 6-hour outage on configuration changes to backbone routers

Social media company Facebook blamed a service outage on 04 October lasting nearly six hours on configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between its data centres, causing "issues" that interrupted their communication. The blackout hit WhatsApp and Instagram as well as the main Facebook service.
