FCC plans open RAN forum for 14 September

The FCC has rescheduled its Forum on 5G Open Radio Access Networks for 14 September. The forum had been planned for March but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The new edition will take place by video conference and stream online.  

The forum will look at the development and deployment of open, virtualized radio access networks. The open RAN movement is seen as a key way to help diversify suppliers in the mobile industry, enhancing security while also lowering costs. 

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and various FCC officials will speak at the event. Other speakers will include representatives from Rakuten, Intel, VMware, Altiostar, Qualcomm, GlobalFoundries, the Open RAN Policy Coalition, Dell, CableLabs, Nvidia, Parallel Wireless, Mavenir, Dish Network, IBM, HPE, Jio, Nokia, Blue Danube, Spirent and several US universities.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said it has adopted a Notice of Inquiry to open a formal discussion on the opportunities and potential challenges presented by open and virtualised radio access networks. Comments are requested on the current status of development and deployment, whether and how the FCC might foster the success of the technologies, and how to support competitiveness and new entrant access to this emerging market.

FCC to vote in March on 3.5 GHz auction, Open RAN consultation

The FCC will vote at its next meeting in March on releasing another 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band for 5G services. Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said she also plans to start a dialogue on open RAN standards in the mobile industry.

Open RAN Policy Coalition to cooperate with GSMA, TIP, CableLabs on open RAN issues

The Open RAN Policy Coalition said it has joined the coalition of coalitions, newly formed to cooperate on global Open RAN issues. "As nations begin to deploy next generation networks, the goal of the new coalition is to ensure that a healthy, robust ecosystem exists to ensure competition and consumer quality,"  the Open RAN Policy Coalition said. Participating coalitions include BSA-The Software Alliance, CableLabs, GSMA and the Telecom Infra Project (TIP).

NEC has selected NXP Semiconductors to supply RF Airfast multi-chip modules to be used in a Massive MIMO 5G antenna Radio Unit (RU) for Japanese operator Rakuten Mobile. NEC's Massive MIMO 5G antenna RU features a 5G open virtual radio access network (vRAN) interface and has been adopted by Rakuten Mobile for its fully virtualized cloud-native mobile network.

The Open RAN Policy Coalition welcomed nine new companies to its membership. New members include American Tower, Broadcom, GigaTera Communications, Inseego, Ligado Networks, Nvidia, RIFT, Texas Instruments, and Xilinx. Vodafone switches on live OpenRAN 4G site, claiming UK first

Vodafone said it has become the first UK mobile operator to switch on a live Open radio Access Network (OpenRAN) 4G site, enabling the introduction of more suppliers for mobile networks. The first site is now connecting the Royal Welsh Showground in Powys, Wales, with the help of Mavenir. Vodafone will now focus on seeing where it can introduce more of these type of sites, for more economical voice and high-speed connectivity.
