The volume of remittances to users through FNB's eWallet in South Africa now exceeds ZAR 33.0 billion since the inception of the mobile money service, with ZAR 1.2 billion sent every month, IT-Online reported. Five million people have used eWallet in South Africa and 3.5 million are active users, meaning that they have used this service in the last six months.
Of the ZAR 33.0 billion sent, ZAR 27.8 billion has been sent through the traditional consumer eWallet service, with eWallet Pro, making up the other ZAR 5.2 billion. That service allows businesses to pay workers without bank accounts and is showing good growth. It has the same functionality as the eWallet consumer service, but has the addition of a prepaid Visa Card.
In sub-Saharan Africa, FNB eWallet continues to do well with Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Swaziland and Lesotho sending a combined ZAR 6.6 billion.
