FreedomPop launches freemium mobile broadband service
The new MVNO FreedomPop has launched a beta trial of its mobile broadband services in the US. The company offers 500MB free each month over the Clearwire Wimax network, and users can buy additional prepaid data for USD 10 per GB. Customers need a Wi-Fi hotspot device or USB modem in order to access the service; these are available free with deposits of respectively USD 89 or USD 49. In the next 4-6 weeks FreedomPop will also launch its iPhone case that doubles as a hotspot. The company's business model centres on selling extra services, such as a device replacement service and insurance, alerts on data use and a speed boost. Customers can also earn extra data by signing up friends to the network, watching ads or taking up promotions from partner companies.
