German ICT exports surpass EUR 38 bln in 2017

Germany's foreign trade volume for information and telecommunications technology (ICT) reached an all-time high in 2017, with exports of German ICT products and services increasing 7 percent to EUR 38.1 billion, according to new research from German digital association Bitkom. Within the sector, exports of German IT hardware increased 19 percent to EUR 19.5 billion, while entertainment electronics exports increased 6 percent to EUR 4.8 billion. Telecommunications products saw their exports decline 5 percent to EUR 13.8 billion, however.

Imports of ICT products into Germany likewise grew last year by 9 percent to EUR 63.6 billion, with IT imports increasing 13 percent to EUR 30.4 billion, entertainment electronics imports increasing 9 percent to EUR 10.1 billion and telecoms imports increasing 3 percent to EUR 23.1 billion, said Bitkom.

Bitkom found that Germany’s largest export markets for its ICT products last year were Poland, France and the Czech Republic. Exports to Poland grew 23 percent to EUR 3.3 billion, while exports to France and the Czech Republic increased 9 percent (EUR 3.2 billion) and 35 percent (EUR 3.1 billion) in 2017, respectively. Exports to the UK also increased 9 percent last year to EUR 3 billion, while Germany also exported EUR 1.9 billion worth of ICT products and services to the US in 2017.

China on the other hand is by far the biggest ICT importer into Germany, found Bitkom. The country exported EUR 29.9 billion worth of ICT products and services, a year-on-year increase of 9 percent. Other major importers of IT and telecoms products into Germany last year were the Czech Republic (EUR 3.7 billion), the Netherlands (EUR 3.4 million) and South Korea, whose imports to Germany increased 156 percent last year to EUR 1.9 billion, said Bitkom.
