Germany launches fund for connected, automated cars
Germany's Digital Infrastructure Minister Alexander Dobrindt has launched a EUR 80 million programme to support the development of automated and networked driving. The grants will be available through 2020 to support development of automated and connected driving solutions on digital test beds across Germany.

Only 15 percent of people in Germany aged 18 to 35 do not expect to purchase Smart Home technology, according to an opinion poll commissioned by the company Coqon from YouGov. German ban on mobiles at the wheel to extend to tablets

Germany Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt plans to extend the ban on drivers using mobile phones at the wheel to other electronic devices, such as tablets, said Agence France-Presse (AFP). The ministry has asked the individual federal states to formulate their traffic laws more loosely, so that the mobile ban can apply to other such gadgets, too.

BMW ConnectedDrive users can book Telekom hotspots

Deutsche Telekom confirmed that BMW ConnectedDrive users can now book a Wi-Fi hotspot using Deutsche Telekom's HotSpot Drive portal. The mobile hotspot allows users to connect up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices to the high-speed internet at the same time, without them needing their own SIM cards. The moving Wi-Fi hotspot was first integrated into new BMW 7 series models in October 2015, with other models to follow soon. UK govt consults on automated car proposals

The UK government has launched a consultation to help pave the way for automated cars to be used on British roads. Under the proposed measures, rules will be changed so automated vehicles can be insured for use on the roads. It also proposes changes to the Highway Code so advanced driver assistance systems that change lanes on the motorway and park the vehicle by remote control can be used safely. Jaguar Land Rover to test autonomous cars in UK

Jaguar Land Rover plans to test autonomous and connected driving technology by creating a fleet of over 100 research vehicles over the next four years, reports The Guardian. The first of these research vehicles will launch later in 2016. The vehicles will be tested on a 41-mile (66 km) route on motorways and urban roads near its headquarters in Whitley, Coventry. Deutsche Telekom is working with Huawei, Audi, Toyota and other car makers to test LTE-Vehicular (LTE-V) connected vehicle technology. They are conducting technical field trials on a section of the 'digital A9 motorway test bed' near Ingolstadt in Germany. LG Electronics (LG) and Volkswagen have announced a close collaboration for research and development of service platforms for connected cars, and have signed a memorandum of understanding.
