Global PC shipments fall in Q1 as Covid-19 impacts supply chain

Data from IDC and Gartner shows that global PC shipments fell in Q1 2020, despite increased demand to meet remote work and school needs, due to reduced supply as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak in China.

According to IDC, shipments of traditional PCs (desktops, notebooks, workstations) fell by 9.8 percent year-on-year in Q1 2020 to 53.2 million units. The extended closure of manufacturing plants in China (the world's largest supplier of PCs) in February, coupled with logistics and labour problems later in the quarter, resulted in reduced supply. Lenovo accounted for 24.1 percent of the market with shipments of 12.83 million units, followed by HP with 22 percent (11.70 million) and Dell for 19.7 percent (10.49 million).

According to Gartner, worldwide PC shipments fell by 12.3 percent year-on-year in Q1 to 51.6 million units. Following three consecutive quarters of growth, the global PC market registered its biggest decline since 2013 as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak. Lenovo shipped 12.61 million units in Q1 for a 24.4 percent market share, followed by HP with 11.11 million units (21.5% share) and Dell with 10.16 million units (19.7% share).
