
Google Chrome, Safari gain further ground in Europe

Web browser Internet Explorer occupies the number one spot in the browser market in Europe with 44.8 percent of all visits in August, down 8 percent from a year earlier, according to a study covering traffic on 14,073 websites in 23 European countries. The study was conducted between 1 and 31 August by web analytics company AT Internet. Mozilla/Firefox also saw its market share slide 2 percent to 28.1 compared to a year ago. Google Chrome saw the largest increase in visits, namely 7.5 percent from a year ago to 15.1 percent of visits. Safari continues to grow as well, reaching a market share of 9.1 percent, that is up 2.7 percent compared to August 2010, while Opera is placed fifth with 2.2 percent, slightly down from 2.3 percent. The study refers to website visits on websites audited by an AT Internet software, websites whose traffic was mainly generated in the country they are based in. It also refers to the average traffic per website as well as the average traffic in the 23 covered countries.
