Google has announced the name Tensor for its first in-house SoC designed for the Pixel smartphones. The company said it designed its own chip in order to make the most of its machine learning and AI technologies. Tensor will feature first on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro launching this autumn.
The chip was announced in a teaser for the new phones by Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh. Featuring an "industrial design", the phones "redefine what it means to be a Pixel", he said. They will run Android 12 and the new 'Material You' user interface and come with an upgraded rear camera system.
The larger camera set-up results in a wide black bar across the back of the device to house the sensors. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro also come with new materials and finishes, with a polished aluminum frame for the Pro and matte aluminum finish for the 6. More details will be announced at the launch later this year.
