Google pays RUB 438 mln fine to Russia

Google has paid a RUB 438 million fine to the Russian state budget, according to a statement from the federal competition watchdog FAS, reports Vedomosti.

The fine was related to the investigation based on the complaint from Russian search engine Yandex, which said Google had abused of its dominant position in the Russian market of mobile applications for Android-based devices.

Google has expanded search options on its Chrome browser for Android users, reports Cnews.ru. Russian search engines Yandex and Mail.ru are now available, rather than Google search as the default option. The change is in line with Google's commitments to the Russian competition watchdog FAS, which earlier found the company was abusing its dominant position by making its own search service the default option.

In the latest beta version of the Chrome browser, Russian users can now choose a search engine, rather than rely on Google as default.
