Google has launched the full version of Android 10. It has started rolling out to Google's Pixel phones first and will reach other new and existing devices later this year.
Google said Android 10, its first version not to carry a dessert name, brings support for more on-device machine learning, as well as new technologies such as foldable devices and 5G. In addition, almost 50 changes related to privacy and security are expected to provide customers with greater protection and control over their data.
New features in Android 10 include Dark Theme, to dim the screen across the phone or in specific apps to save battery power; live caption to create subtitling for videos, audio messages and podcasts; gesture-based navigation for basic phone tasks to replace visible buttons; and suggested actions in Smart Reply, for example to open a website link in an email or locate an address in the message on Google Maps.
Google also added a Privacy menu to the Android Settings menu, to provide users more control and quicker access to data settings such as web activity and ad controls. In addition, Android users will receive reminders on when apps are accessing location data and given the option to only share location data with apps when in use. Google security updates will also roll out in real time through the Play Store, the same as apps update, rather than waiting for a monthly patch.
